Securely dispose of unused medications any time at Tidelands Health hospitals

You can drop off unused or expired medications for proper disposal any time at Tidelands Health hospitals.

Secure kiosks for medication disposal are available near the main entrance at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital, 606 Black River Road, and at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital, 4070 U.S. 17 in Murrells Inlet.

Simply drop off expired or unwanted medications in the MedDrop collection containers for proper disposal by Stericycle, a medical waste management company.

The drop-off containers, available every day of the year for free, supplement medication take-back events offered in the community that usually coincide with National Prescription Drug Take Back Days in April and October. The most recent National Prescription Drug Take Back Day was Saturday.

Tidelands Health installed the MedDrop collection containers in mid-2023 after seeing incredible demand for proper disposal during community take-back events and getting requests directly from residents throughout the year.

In 2024, nearly 900 pounds of medications were collected in the two MedDrop containers for proper disposal.

“It’s impressive and rewarding to see so many people in our community taking advantage of our free medication take-back service,” said David Foxworth, pharmacy manager at Tidelands Health. “With the MedDrop containers available throughout the year and convenient to access, we hope to encourage even more people to properly dispose of their medications.”

Proper disposal helps keep medications from falling into the hands of those who may abuse them and prevents potential environmental contamination through improper disposal in drains.

Community members can drop off prescription and over-the-counter medications for free using the MedDrop kiosks at Tidelands Waccamaw and Tidelands Georgetown. All medications should be contained in a sealed bottle or jar, especially liquids, creams and ointments. Remove or obscure any personally identifiable information. For safety reasons, the kiosks cannot accommodate medications with any needles, sharps, aerosols or batteries.
