    News for Immediate Release:

Director earns national award for innovation, mentoring at Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program
The director of the Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program has earned a national award for fostering innovation and serving as an exemplary role model for resident physicians.
Dr. Mike Malone is one of only 10 residency program directors in the country honored with the 2024 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award, presented by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, a non-profit, professional organization responsible for accreditation of more than 13,000 residency and fellowship programs in the United States.
The ACGME awards shine a spotlight on recipients for their remarkable commitment, innovation and valuable contributions to the graduate medical education community. Award winners in all the categories will be honored during the 2024 ACGME annual conference in March.
“I am proud to extend my congratulations to each of the extraordinary ACGME Award recipients for your exceptional achievements in advancing graduate medical education,” said Dr. Thomas Nasca, ACGME president and CEO. “Your dedication and contributions to the field have not gone unnoticed, and we are honored to recognize your outstanding work. Your accomplishments have not only improved graduate medical education but also set a shining example for future generations of medical professionals.”
In addition to providing clinical training and experience, the Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program includes a focus on transformational leadership that helps physicians become high-impact leaders who understand the health care environment and develop essential business and leadership skills. The program also incorporates a focus on wellness for residents and building individual resilience – traits that will help their long-term professional success.
“Our dedicated faculty members take pride in the innovative approach of the Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program in training and preparing physicians for successful careers in providing care to patients,” Dr. Malone said. “Every day, I have the pleasure of mentoring these young physicians and helping them grow as leaders and care providers through our residency program. I’m honored to be recognized with such a prestigious award from ACGME for doing something I love.”
The residency program continues to be recognized nationally for excellence and innovation. Earlier this year, Tidelands Health was one of three finalists from more than 850 ACGME-accredited sponsoring institutions for the DeWitt C. Baldwin Jr. Award recognizing institutions in fostering a respectful, supportive environment for medical education and the delivery of patient care.
Tidelands Health developed the residency program, based at Tidelands Health Medical Park at Holmestown Road, to attract family medicine physicians to help meet the need for additional primary care doctors in the fast-growing region. After completing their residency at Tidelands Health, numerous physicians have joined the health system as family medicine physicians seeing patients in practices from Andrews to Myrtle Beach.
