Tidelands Health offers minimally invasive treatment for enlarged prostate

Men with a common prostate condition may benefit from a minimally invasive treatment at Tidelands Health.

Aquablation is a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, a common condition that affects half of men by age 60.

BPH, also known as enlarged prostate, can affect a man’s quality of life with symptoms that include frequent urination, slow urinary stream, a sensation of not being able to completely empty the bladder or other urinary issues. Men with an enlarged prostate may wake up several times a night to use the restroom or need to go every couple of hours -- or even more frequently -- during the day.

Depending on the severity of symptoms, the condition has historically been treated with medication or surgery.

Aquablation provides another effective treatment option that precisely removes the affected prostate tissue to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.

“Men should know there are very effective and minimally invasive surgical options for their urinary condition that offer symptom relief and can help them stop taking medications to treat the condition,” said Dr. Lauren Cooley, urologist and urological oncology specialist at Tidelands Health Urology. “Aquablation therapy is an effective treatment that preserves men’s sexual function. When it comes to BPH, men need to remember that it’s treatable.”

During aquablation, a surgeon uses a robotic-guided camera and an ultrasound image map of the prostate to selectively remove obstructing prostate tissue with a heat-free water jet. Because it doesn’t use heat like other surgical treatments, aquablation greatly reduces the risk of sexual side effects. The minimally invasive procedure can be effectively used on a range of prostate sizes.

Dr. Cooley encourages men suffering from urinary problems to seek help because effective treatments are available.

“Your life doesn’t have to revolve around going to the restroom. That does not have to be your normal,” Dr. Cooley said. “Our care team can discuss your symptoms and experience to determine the best treatment option to help improve your quality of life.”
