    News for Immediate Release:

New program at Tidelands Health Pawleys Family YMCA helps cancer survivors ‘livestrong’
Cancer survivors now have an exercise and wellness program tailored to their specific needs offered at the Tidelands Health Pawleys Family YMCA.
Livestrong at the YMCA is an evidence-based physical activity and well-being program designed to meet the unique needs of cancer survivors. The 12-week program provides a supportive and empowering environment for survivors to safely achieve their goals, including building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance and improving confidence and self-esteem.
The program is offered through a partnership between the YMCA of Coastal Carolina and the Livestrong Foundation, a global nonprofit dedicated to improving the daily lives of cancer survivors and boasting a community of millions proudly wearing Livestrong wristbands.
“Livestrong at the YMCA helps people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body,” said Angie Hill, the class instructor and senior health and wellness director at the YMCA of Coastal Carolina. “The specially designed, research-based program provides a holistic approach to healing, helping cancer survivors regain their quality of life by offering a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.”
YMCA staff members trained in supportive cancer care lead the Livestrong at the YMCA program, which features two sessions a week offering cardiovascular conditioning, strength training and balance and flexibility exercises. Participants also receive fitness and quality-of-life assessments before and after the program.
In addition to the physical benefits, Livestrong at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors by providing a supportive environment where they can connect.
“A program like Livestrong at the YMCA offers activities specially designed to help cancer survivors exercise in a safe and supportive environment,” said Dr. Betsy Adams with Tidelands Health Cancer Care Network. “The emotional support can also be valuable in helping cancer survivors connect and move forward through their shared experience.”
Livestrong at the YMCA is open to those 18 and older. The next session runs from March 11 to May 30 at the Tidelands Health Pawleys Family YMCA, 12965 Ocean Highway in Pawleys Island. To register, call 843-979-0266, or email ahill@coastalcarolinaymca.org.
Tidelands Health is the exclusive health system partner of the YMCA of Coastal Carolina. Together, the two organizations provide the community with access to a variety of services and programs to improve health and wellness.
