Explore the search for the Capitana, the flagship of Spanish explorer Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón’s 1526 expedition. Learn about ongoing underwater archaeological investigations in Winyah Bay and the Santee Delta and what they reveal about one of the earliest chapters in American history.
Featured speaker is James Spireck, South Carolina State Underwater Archaeologist, who will discuss the search of the Capitana shipwreck and the 1526 Ayllón expedition. The program will be introduced by Dr. Chester DePratter, Research Professor Emeritus from the University of South Carolina, one of the nation's leading scholars of 16th century Southeastern archaeology and Spanish exploration.
Sponsored by the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology Archaeological Research Trust and the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce, the program is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
