This approximately 4-mile guided hike begins at the Discovery Center parking lot and winds through scenic pine and hardwood forests, historic rice fields, and culturally significant sites that reveal the lives of those who lived and worked here. Along the way, participants will stop at Alderly and Marietta Cemeteries, the two African American cemeteries at Hobcaw Barony, to discuss the families buried there, grave-decorating traditions, and symbolic tombstone art. At Alderly Landing, participants will view an abandoned rice field and discuss how rice was grown and processed by the enslaved workers who labored on the land. The historic slave cabin at Alderly Village will be viewed from the exterior as we reflect on daily life in this community. The journey continues to Bellefield’s Victory Garden and graves of Ella Severin and Jean Dartez.
Participants will need to dress for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes, and bring bug spray and water. Program is weather dependent. (Exertion level: High impact – walking on rough terrain, standing for long periods of time) Reservations required.
