Join Georgetown County as they cut the Ribbon on the new Murrells Inlet Bike Bridge Hwy 17 Parking Lot! Project Summary: The Murrells Inlet bike bridge Hwy 17 parking lot project is located at the southern end of Business Hwy 17, is situated on the west side of the highway. Before the construction, It is a small sandy area without designated parking spaces, leading to improper parking and large pools of water. This made the area unsuitable for safe walking conditions to the bike path. The primary goal of this project is to enhance safety for both drivers and bike users who utilize the parking lot, while also improving the drainage system to ensure stormwater is properly channeled into the creek. The project design & construction work included the installation of 271 FT of 18’ and 44 FT of 15” reinforced concrete pipes, which connect to total 6 junction boxes and catch basins, effectively capturing and directing stormwater. In addition, over 2,400 SQFT of pervious concrete was installed in 13 marked parking spaces to improve stormwater management. The old sand area was replaced with 6,192 SQFT of durable asphalt, enhancing safety, durability, and aesthetics. Traffic control signs are placed appropriately to help smooth and safe traffic flow. Finally, this updated parking facility not only meets practical needs but also contributes to the overall visitor experience. The scenic views of the Murrells Inlet marsh create an inviting environment, offering tourists a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature before continuing their journey.
