Almost five miles of the original King’s Highway can be found on Hobcaw Barony. This exclusive hike will take participants down four miles of the historic by-way which originated as a Native American path that was later joined with the 1,300 mile road built at the royal command of Charles II.
Points of interest include longleaf pine forests and the endangered red cockaded woodpecker; a cemetery for plantation owners and members of the famous Caines decoy carving family; and the ferry landing at Fraser’s Point where travelers would cross from Calais to Dover Plantations. Sign up early as this hike is very infrequently offered!
Participants cars will need to navigate rustic dirt roads. If weather conditions prevent safe travel, the program will be cancelled. (Exertion level: High impact, hiking, standing for long periods, walking on uneven terrain)
In response to Georgetown County Emergency Ordinance 20-33 and the COVID-19 situation, the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center requires visitors to wear face coverings when entering the Discovery Center as well as other buildings on the tours.
