The attorneys and legal professional of the Judge Advocate General (“JAG”) Detachment are pleased to offer a free Wills Clinic for First Responders in Horry and Georgetown Counties in March of 2021.
The South Carolina State Guard (“State Guard”) is an all-volunteer military organization that is part of South Carolina’s Military Department. The State Guard assists state and local government as well as the South Carolina National Guard with their response to natural and man-made disasters as well as search & rescue (“SAR”) missions. Although the primary function of the JAG Detachment is to provide legal support to the State Guard, the Detachment also offers an annual pro bono Legal Clinic to the State’s first responders, military members or veterans.
This year’s Legal Clinic will offer free wills and SC Health Care Powers of Attorney to first responders in Georgetown and Horry counties. If you are interested in participating in the March Wills Clinic, please read and follow the directions set forth below. Prior Clinics have been very well received; therefore, to ensure that we are able to assist as many people as possible, the JAG Detachment asks that you follow the instructions set forth below and meet the deadlines established therein.
TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MARCH WILLS CLINIC, YOU MUST:
1) Email the JAG Detachment’s Chief Paralegal, WO1 Terralee Shipp, at terralee.shipp@sg.sc.gov BEFORE the end of day on Sunday, February 14, 2021. This email must include: Your Full Name, the Agency you work for, whether you want a Will and/or Health Care Power of Attorney and your availability to meet with an attorney sign these documents in Pawleys Island on either March 13 or 14, 2021.
2) By return email, Chief Shipp will provide you with an appropriate questionnaire that explains the process and asks for the information needed to draft your will and/or health care power of attorney. She will also assign you an appointment time on either March 13 or 14 based on the schedule you provide us in your initial email.
The questionnaire will be a Word document. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE QUESTIONNAIRE USING A COMPUTER RUNNING THE WORD PROGRAM then email the completed Questionnaire back to Chief Shipp BEFORE the end of day on Sunday, February 28, 2021. Due to time constraints, the JAG Detachment will not be able to process any questionnaire received after February 28th, so please do not delay in completing the document.
3) Attorney volunteers will be on-site with the State Guard’s JAG Detachment on Saturday and Sunday, March 13-14 to review a draft will and/or power of attorney with you, make any needed changes, and then execute/notarize the documents. The law firm of Goldfinch & Winslow, LLC is hosting the 2021 Wills Clinic at its office located at 11019 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island, SC. We understand your availability may change from what you provided us in your initial email. Just alert Chief Shipp via email of any scheduling conflicts that may arise AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and she will reschedule your appointment.
As in past years, we are expecting a large turnout for this Wills Clinic so please read and follow the three (3) steps set forth above. If you have any questions, please send a brief email to Chief Shipp and we will respond as soon as we can. All of the attorneys and legal professionals volunteering for this Clinic have full-time jobs and are doing this during their free-time, so be patient and we will respond as soon as we can.
