News for Immediate Release:
Three Tidelands Health team members known for their kindness, positive attitudes and dedication to helping patients and their loved ones have earned special awards from the health system.
The Caring Hearts awards were presented to Slayder Tilton, a nursing assistant at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital; Kyle Toomer, a nursing assistant at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital, and Theresa Mandarino, a patient scheduler at Tidelands Health Family Medicine at Holmestown Road.
“We all know how much a small act of kindness can lift one’s spirits, and that’s even more important in a health care setting. Slayder, Kyle and Theresa go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of our patients and their loved ones,” said Ashley Capps, vice president of operations and chief nursing officer. “Through their kindness and care, these Caring Hearts winners provide a layer of comfort and security to enhance the lives of our patients and offer support to our patients’ loved ones.”
Tidelands Health presents Caring Hearts awards annually to recognize outstanding team members who show kindness, a positive attitude and a commitment to help patients, visitors and colleagues. Winners are known as team players who take initiative and execute their roles with a positive attitude, patience and a heart of gold.
Toomer takes time with patients to help them feel as comfortable as possible throughout their stay at Tidelands Waccamaw. In one instance, a patient who was having a difficult time being away from his wife and loved ones benefited from the extra time Toomer spent with him listening to his stories.
“Over the course of a few days, you could tell the patient felt a sense of relief being able to talk and be heard during his stay,” a team member wrote in the nomination. “(Kyle) repeatedly takes his time to get to know each one of his patients and make them feel as comfortable as possible. He encompasses what it means to be a Caring Hearts recipient.”
Tilton is known for his positive attitude that lifts the spirits of not only his patients but also his fellow Tidelands Georgetown team members, who describe him as an exceptional team player who is always willing to pitch in to help.
“Slayder is a great asset to our team,” a Tidelands Health leader noted on his nomination. “Very eager to learn and grow professionally. No matter how busy or difficult his assignment is, he always has a smile on his face.”
At Tidelands Health Family Medicine at Holmestown Road, Mandarino consistently goes above and beyond to meet patients’ needs and is described as a “consummate patient advocate,” often putting in extra time to help schedule patients and make sure they receive timely responses.
“She always asks if the patient has any other needs we can assist with and consistently provides excellent service. She never accepts ‘no’ and will pursue all avenues to meet the patients’ needs,” a Tidelands Health leader wrote in the nomination. “Theresa goes above and beyond to ensure patient needs are met. She consistently gives 100 percent and never hesitates to do what is asked of her. We are fortunate to have her on our team.”
