News for Immediate Release:
A Tidelands Health physician and leader with nearly 40 years of experience has been appointed to the state board that oversees the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Dr. William Richmond to fill the 7th Congressional District seat on the S.C. Board of Health and Environmental Control. The eight-member board oversees operations of the state agency and adopts rules for promoting and protecting the health of the public and the environment. The Senate confirmed Dr. Richmond’s appointment Thursday.
Dr. Richmond, an emergency medicine physician and director of emergency medicine at Tidelands Health, brings a wealth of medical experience and knowledge of the South Carolina coast to his new role on the state board. He joined the health system’s medical staff in 1984 and now oversees all emergency medicine staff and care at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital and Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet.
In addition to providing care, Dr. Richmond has served in multiple leadership roles for the region’s largest health care provider, including department chairman. Through the years, his peers have repeatedly elected him to serve as chief of staff, a key role responsible for providing leadership, guidance and effective communication between medical staff and administrators.
“Health care is near and dear to my heart, and I welcome the opportunity to collaborate with leaders throughout South Carolina to promote and protect the health of our state’s residents,” Dr. Richmond said. “Most of us in health care have a passion for serving our patients and community, and I’m eager to serve in an even greater way by joining this state board. I’m eager to get to work.”
Dr. Richmond earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He lives in Pawleys Island with his wife, Dr. Gayle Richmond. They have five adult children and two grandchildren.
