SUMMARY:White House Farm Tour
DESCRIPTION:The original Carolina Gold\, from which our rice was developed\, was brought to the US from Madagascar. Starting in the 18th century\, White House Plantation\, now White House Farms\, has grown and processed this highly renowned rice. "Andy's Rice" has endured the years\, wars and hurricanes- even the Great Depression.\n\n\n\nThese hurdles\, coupled with the revolution of growing rice by mechanized means on large farms caused many starts and stops in White House's production. Although not continuous\, the 21st century marks the 4th century of rice production in these fields. \n\n\n\nParticipants will visit land once owned by Joel Poinsett and later John Julius Pringle\, who married the daughter of Governor Robert Allston\, Elizabeth. Mr. Pringle only lived a few years after their marriage\, but Elizabeth carried on maintaining White House and her family's property\, Chicora Wood. Her story as a widow in the period after the Civil War is chronicled in her book A Woman Rice Planter. \n\n\n\nThis tour will feature modern methods of growing Carolina Gold and each participant will be able to take a bag of Andy's Charleston Gold Rice home.\n\n\n\n(Exertion level: high impact   standing for long periods of time\, walking on uneven terrain)
