News for Immediate Release:
Tidelands Health has substantially completed administration of first doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Georgetown County School District teachers and staff who chose to receive the vaccine.
GCSD employees began receiving the vaccine at Tidelands Health’s two regional vaccination sites in Georgetown and Horry counties March 8, the first day school employees became eligible under South Carolina vaccination guidelines.
On Saturday, Tidelands Health administered first doses to the remaining GCSD teachers and staff who elected to get the vaccine at this time. The district employees received the vaccine at the health system’s regional vaccination site in Georgetown County.
School district employees came eager to get their first dose of the vaccine to protect themselves, their students and their families -- and to take a big step toward normalcy.
“I will feel a lot more relief,” Kyea Sturkin, a cosmetology teacher, said as she completed her registration form to get the vaccine Saturday. “I want to make sure we can stay safe. If everybody can stick together and do what we need to do, everybody will be safer.”
District employees already have their appointments to return to the Tidelands Health vaccination site in a few weeks to receive their second dose of the vaccine.
“What a relief for our teachers and staff,” Superintendent Keith Price said. “The vaccine, combined with the safety precautions we already have in place, provides peace of mind for our team. We are grateful to the Tidelands Health team for providing such an easy experience for our teachers and staff to get this lifesaving vaccine.”
Going forward, Tidelands Health will continue to administer vaccine to GCSD employees who didn’t initially sign up to receive the vaccine but who decide to get it later.
In addition to its partnership with GCSD, Tidelands Health has administered vaccine to hundreds of other educators in the area, including employees of private schools, Horry County Schools, Coastal Carolina University, Horry-Georgetown Technical College and others.
Any eligible individual in Phase 1a and 1b of South Carolina’s vaccination plan can easily schedule an appointment to receive the COVID-19 vaccine from Tidelands Health by calling 1-833-6-MYSHOT or via the online portal or chat at tidelandshealth.org/vaccine. Appointments are available this week.
“It’s our honor to administer vaccine to our community members – including the teachers and school staff who provide such valuable service in educating our kids and grandkids,” said Dr. Gerald Harmon, vice president of medical affairs at Tidelands Health.
Tidelands Health has been a long-time partner with Georgetown County School District to improve community health. From offering job shadowing opportunities and placing athletic trainers in high schools to providing medical counsel and guidance for school district nurses, the not-for-profit health system works with the district to improve the health and wellness of students and district employees.
As of today, Tidelands Health has administered more than 42,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
Mary Ann Coker, an instructional coach at Kensington Elementary School, chose to receive the vaccine not only to protect herself but also her students, her 7-year-old twins and her 98-year-old grandmother.
“I feel relieved and thankful we were able to get it so easily,” Coker said. “I am trying to do my part.”
