News for Immediate Release:
Tidelands Health’s innovative efforts to address the behavioral health needs of patients and community members are being highlighted nationally as a model for other health systems.
As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the American Hospital Association is recognizing the health system’s creative approaches to behavioral health needs by featuring the efforts in a series of podcasts and through a blog by Bruce Bailey, president and CEO of Tidelands Health.
While Tidelands Health, like many health systems across the country, does not offer inpatient behavioral health services, the organization has created ways to address the specialized needs of behavioral health patients seeking medical care in the emergency department or other areas of the health system and to improve access to behavioral health services for patients and community members.
“The unique challenges of providing medical care to patients also needing behavioral health services demanded unique solutions,” Bailey said. “Our team developed creative approaches that help ensure these patients have a safe place to receive medical care and an effective path to the behavioral health treatment they need.”
The three podcasts by the American Hospital Association explore several of those successful initiatives, including the creation of a peer recovery program for patients, establishment of a secure unit in the emergency department designed specifically for behavioral health patients and the ongoing efforts by the health system’s community health resources team to work with state and local leaders to improve access to behavioral health services.
The podcasts also highlight Tidelands Health’s participation with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health telehealth collaborative for emergency department patients and a partnership with the Medical University of South Carolina for routine telepsychiatry consults for hospitals and physician practices.
“Tidelands Health is leading the way in caring for the whole patient by integrating behavioral and physical health services,” said Rick Pollack, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association. “Treating patients in different care settings is vital for improving community health. The leadership and creativity at Tidelands have already resulted in lower costs and better outcomes for patients with complex and highly specialized needs.”
