News for Immediate Release:
St. James High School teachers are providing an important lesson for their health sciences students: the need to support others during times of crisis.
The health sciences department has donated boxes of isolation gowns, masks and other supplies to Tidelands Health to help protect the health system’s medical professionals and patients amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The school had the items on hand for use in teaching.
Michael Chapman, a health sciences teacher and EMS instructor, also is a paramedic and knows first-hand how important such supplies are. He gathered up what he had – more than 100 masks, 100 gowns, hundreds of alcohol preps and more – and, with the approval of the state Department of Education, donated them to Tidelands Health.
“It just made sense,” Maryam Fischer, a health sciences teacher and athletic trainer at St. James High School, said of the donation. “Keep doing what you do, Tidelands Health. The community is behind you 100 percent. We are happy to do anything we can do.”
Pam Maxwell, chief nursing officer at Tidelands Health, said the support of individuals and organizations across the region has been overwhelming as the health system responds to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Tidelands Health is grateful to St. James High School and to everyone who continues to donate supplies, food and more to support our team and our patients during this crisis,” Maxwell said.
