Embracing diversity by REINVENTING the Christmas Tree
APPROACH TO DIVERSITY EDUCATION
Our innovative approach to embracing diversity was to REINVENT the Christmas Tree into a ME’LANGE TREE!
Definition of mélange: a mixture often of incongruous elements
Mélange got mixed into the melting pot of English back in the 1600s. It derives from the Middle French verb mesler, which means "to mix." "Mélange" is actually one of several French contributions to the English body of words for miscellaneous mixtures.
Our students are excited about contributing each month to decorate the tree with quotes, highlighting personal experiences, and educating us all on iconic figures from that demographic that has contributed to our AMERICAN HERITAGE!
The months will celebrate:
February – Black History Month
March - Irish-American Heritage; Women’s History; Greek-American Heritage
April – Webster International Student month
May – Military Appreciation Month; Jewish-American Heritage; Asian-Pacific American
Month; National Police Week
June – American FLAG Month
July – Patriots (American) Month
August – World Senior Citizen’s Month
September – National Hispanic Heritage Month
October – Italian-American Heritage; Polish-American Heritage; First Responders Recognition
Month (and of course – Oktoberfest)
November – Native American Heritage Month (American Indians and Alaska Natives)
December – Christmas at Webster-Myrtle Beach
As individuals are finding out more about their backgrounds and heritage from Ancestry and DNA products now on the market, it is exciting to share that with others. We will be posting a NEW picture of our Me’lange Tree each month and share with you the wonderful items that are put onto the tree.
We encourage ALL our Chamber Members to visit our facility, have a cup of coffee, and if you like - contribute an item for the Heritage Month we will be showcasing J J
