COVID-19 Relief & Recovery Fund awards more than $640K to nonprofits in coastal SC, with one-third awarded in Horry and Georgetown counties
MURRELLS INLET, S.C.: Waccamaw Community Foundation and its regional partners in the COVID-19 Relief & Recovery Fund are excited to announce today that more than $2.1 million has been raised since the fund's inception, and $641,745 has been awarded so far to nonprofits across coastal South Carolina to support communities impacted by the pandemic.
So far, funds have been awarded to 59 grantees serving all nine coastal counties since the fund was established two months ago on March 18. Of those, more than a third of funds — $218,485 —has been awarded to 18 organizations in Horry and Georgetown counties. Those grantees are providing food and utility assistance, business and worker support and telehealth services throughout the community.
The fund has now raised $2.15 million in donations since its inception, with the fund balance now at $1.5 million. Donations continue to be accepted and grantmaking is ongoing. Every dollar is going directly to the nonprofits working on providing medical care, food access, financial support and more to those most impacted by the Coronavirus outbreak in the nine counties of coastal South Carolina.
“We are very proud of what we’ve been able to achieve with our partners in such a short time, but it’s what we’re here for,” said Angel Johnson-Brebner, Director of Waccamaw Community Foundation. “When disaster strikes, Waccamaw Community Foundation is here to make sure nonprofits can quickly meet the needs of our community, and it wouldn’t be possible without the outpouring of support from all of our donors in this community.
Coastal Community Foundation and its partners would also like to extend special thank you to the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation for its contribution of $150,000; and to South State Bank for its recent contribution of $100,000 to the fund, which included $25,000 designated specifically for Horry and Georgetown counties.
The COVID-19 Relief & Recovery Fund is set up to fast-track the application process for nonprofits in need of more support to meet the increased demand. Grants are deployed as quickly as possible on a rolling basis to help meet community needs as they emerge.
