News for Immediate Release:
Meet Mary Shumpert of Pawleys Island.
Shumpert is 106 years old and received her second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday at the Tidelands Health regional vaccination site in Murrells Inlet. She is the oldest person to receive the vaccine from Tidelands Health since distribution started in December.
Accompanied by her 74-year-old daughter Suzanne Harris, who also received her second dose Wednesday, Shumpert was a trooper throughout the process.
The same was true when she got her first shot of the Pfizer vaccine from Tidelands Health three weeks ago.
“I had a sore arm, but she didn’t even have the sore arm,” Harris said of her mom.
The shot was a breeze for Shumpert, who carries a few photos in her purse including several of her once beloved 1961 white Corvette and of her during her 20s beautifully strutting down a Columbia sidewalk in a homemade dress – a photo that ended up on the front page of the newspaper, Harris said.
Harris and Shumpert are very careful about following COVID-19 safety protocols, including wearing face masks and practicing social distancing. This is the second pandemic for Shumpert, who was a young child during the 1918 influenza pandemic.
Harris said her mom was determined to get the lifesaving COVID-19 vaccine.
“It’s just so reassuring,” Harris said. “It’s not just us – we have our grandchildren and friends we would really like to see more of. And we want to play our part. This makes us feel better.”
As of Tuesday, Tidelands Health has administered nearly 21,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, including more than 15,000 doses to seniors ages 70 and older – a couple of them 100 years old and older - and more than 5,000 doses to health care workers, first responders and others in the region eligible to receive the vaccine in Phase 1a.
What does it say for 106-year-old Shumpert to get the vaccine?
“That she plans on being around awhile,” Harris said.
